RONY PLESL'S SUNNY APARTMENT IN THE HISTORICAL CENTER OF PRAGUE

The criteria by which people choose their homes are as varied as their complexions. According to them, Šárka and Rony Plesl chose their new address mainly with two things in mind - their lifestyle, which is largely determined by their rich social life, and above all the needs of their three daughters. At first glance, it may seem paradoxical that they chose the historic center of Prague. But it is already obvious to the second person how well-considered and prudent the decision was. The Pavlač house with a grassy yard is hidden behind a beautiful baroque gate, well protected from the noise of tourists and traffic. At the same time, the Pleslovy flat is bathed in sunlight practically all day long, and although it offers the family all the modern comforts, the atmosphere of times long past is also reminiscent of some details, as well as the view of the church building or the old acacia tree standing in the yard.
Nothing in this old-town apartment suggests that it looked completely different just a few months ago and had to undergo extensive renovations - today it is really inhabited. Although it seems like a well-hidden treasure, the path to it was quite ordinary for designer Rony Plesl and his wife Šárka, they came across it by chance in an offer of a real estate agency. At first, many people didn't care about a loft apartment, but it became clear to them that it meets what they require from a new home. "We really like to go to openings, to exhibitions, to restaurants, so we had a clear request: as much as possible in the center of the city, quiet and at least a balcony," explains Rony Plesl. "We didn't exactly go after this location. We wanted to combine the lifestyle of us and the children, and we succeeded."
The fact that it originally belonged to the wife of the painter Karel Škréta also testifies to how old the house in which the apartment is located is - at least in its foundations. Of course, it has changed many times since then. Today's apartment of the Pleslovs was created by merging three small ones, which all had access to the living room. That is also why, in its current form, it is actually a series of three main rooms facing the courtyard. From the porch you enter the airy space of the kitchen, dining room and living room. Next to it is the frugal bedroom of the parents, and behind it is a room for the three daughters. Each of the bedrooms has a separate bathroom as well as a walk-in closet.

Although both Rony and Šárka were involved in the arrangement, the acting creative director of the Rückl glassworks was said to have a slightly stronger say. "I'm not a fan of super-modern interiors in old houses. We arranged in a bit of a retro style, probably closest to the 1930s, the golden era," he adds. He notes with undisguised pride that although everything in the apartment had to be reconstructed, including the ceilings, there is no plasterboard used anywhere.
They didn't move too many older pieces of furniture into the new apartment, Rony only mentions a round dining table and a massive sofa in the living area. The walls are decorated with a variety of graphics, photographs, drawings and paintings, from Káj Saudek to Karel Malich and Zdenek Sýkora to Hynek Alt. Some details have been waiting for their placement for years, especially the ceiling fan with wooden blades, which the designer spotted at the Italian company Boffi.
A fascinating moment occurs when the windows begin to let the sun's rays into the apartment. "It starts right in the morning and lasts until the evening," notes Plesl. The new place is said to bring only pleasant surprises to the family so far. "It's better than we expected."
